PSA: Mother’s Day Is This Sunday

For many Ontario families, that means one thing: spa gift cards. Massages, facials, manicures, and wellness treatments are all popular ways to help moms relax and feel appreciated. After all, who doesn’t love a little pampering?

Don’t get me wrong; I am here for a good spa day. I am not saying you should press “clear cart” on that spa gift card. But before you buy, there are a few things worth considering, especially when it comes to:

  • Spa injury risks
  • Cosmetic treatment injuries
  • Ontario personal injury claims.

Spa Injuries Are More Common Than People Think

Spa treatment injuries happen more often than many people realize. Common issues include:

  • burns from laser hair removal
  • skin irritation from chemical peels
  • infections from unsanitary tools
  • injuries caused by overly aggressive or improperly conducted massages or body treatments.

What was supposed to be a thoughtful Mother’s Day experience can quickly become painful, stressful, and expensive.

Mother’s Day is one of the busiest times of the year for Ottawa-area spas and wellness clinics. Appointments fill up fast, staff are under pressure, and businesses sometimes bring in temporary or less experienced employees to keep up with demand. While many spas do a great job during busy seasons, mistakes can happen when businesses are rushing clients through treatments.

When Beauty Treatments Go Wrong

Laser treatments and cosmetic procedures (i.e., laser hair removal) are one of the most common sources of serious spa injuries. If the settings are too strong or the technician lacks proper training, clients can suffer painful burns, scarring, or long-term skin discoloration.

Chemical facials and peels can also cause major irritation when products are used incorrectly or left on for too long. Too often, people think burning is the same as tingling and don’t realize they should ask for help or tell the technician to stop the treatment. Clients with allergies or sensitive skin may also experience severe reactions if spas fail to ask the right questions beforehand.

Even treatments that seem low risk can cause problems. Improperly cleaned manicure or pedicure tools can lead to infections. People often think that spa massages are always the same as Registered Massage Therapy. Non-RMT massage treatments may cause muscle or nerve injuries if too much pressure or improper technique is used.

These types of Ontario spa negligence injuries can sometimes lead to long-term complications, medical treatment costs, lost income and emotional distress

What Are Your Rights After a Spa Injury?

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that spas are heavily regulated medical-style environments. Even spas that look clean and professional can cause injuries if staff are not properly trained or safety standards are ignored.

If you experience an injury during a spa treatment, don’t ignore it or assume it’s normal. Seek medical attention if needed, take photos of your injuries, and keep records of your treatment, expenses, and communication with the spa.

Before you sign a waiver or accept compensation, get legal advice. Sometimes businesses or insurance companies offer quick settlements that do not fully account for ongoing pain, treatment costs, or time away from work.

Speaking with an experienced Ottawa Injury Lawyer can help you understand whether you may have a claim and what your next steps should be.

A Little Relaxation Shouldn’t Lead to Recovery

This Mother’s Day, spa treatments should leave moms feeling refreshed not recovering from injuries. A little relaxation is a great gift, but safety should always come first.
