More than half of fatal motor vehicle accidents involve alcohol

Though educational efforts continue, many motorists still make the decision to drive while impaired. In fact, MADD Canada reports that 58 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents result from drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. One of the most recent accidents claimed the life of an Ontario woman who was simply obeying the rules of the road.

The accident happened in the very early hours of Nov. 24, in the north end of London. A car stopped at a red light was struck by an SUV travelling at a high rate of speed. The force of the collision pushed the car almost 45 meters, and left a blanket of debris along the road. First responders initially believed the accident involved just a single vehicle, due to the wide separation of the two automobiles.

The driver of the car, a 60-year-old woman and local newspaper carrier, was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver, a 23-year-old male, was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. He was then arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing death, and impaired driving causing death.

It is unfortunate that avoidable tragedies like this one keep occurring. While driving will always carry with it an element of risk, many fatal motor vehicle accidents are entirely preventable, and are generally caused by some form of negligence. For the victims’ families, there is no adequate compensation for such a sudden and senseless loss. It may be helpful, however, to seek financial recompense when appropriate, to cover end-of-life expenses and make up for lost wages. A personal injury lawyer, who knows the Ontario legal system and insurance industry, may be able to help during this very emotional time.
