Careless driving leads to serious injuries, death of 1 worker

Working on the highway can be a dangerous profession, but if drivers take the time to slow down and be aware of their surroundings, many of the accidents that could take place could be avoided. For example, if a driver is in a single-lane road with workers on the side, he or she should be paying attention to maintain a proper speed and to stay in his or her lane. Passing out of the lane could lead to an impact with tools, vehicles or even the workers themselves.

That’s what happened in this case involving a driver who crossed the centre line before causing a serious crash. The 70-year-old man has been charged with careless driving for an accident that took place on Highway 17. The crash resulted in the death of one construction worker and resulted in the injuries for a second.

The incident took place when the elderly man’s Jeep Patriot crossed the centre line and hit the two workers. His vehicle continued on after striking the workers and collided with their vehicles, which were parked on the south shoulder of the highway.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that one worker, a 42-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene while the second had to be airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. So far, the police have not reported on why the man may have crossed the line or if intoxication or other factors were at play. He’s expected to appear in court shortly to hear the careless driving charge against him and to enter his plea for the courts to record.
