New type of magnetic resonance imaging sees small brain injuries

If you hit your head in a car accident, are hurt playing a sport or have injured your head in a premises liability accident, it’s important that you get the medical care you need right away. After you are stable, you can focus on your lawsuit or claim, but in the meantime, you should look for answers about your health.

A concussion needs to be diagnosed properly before you can ever receive treatment. Determining the extent of a concussion can be a challenge, but thanks to diffusion tensor imaging, diagnosing brain injuries might have become a little bit easier. Diffusion tensor imaging is a type of advanced magnetic resonance imaging. It can see any kind of abnormality in the brain, helping identify damage and helping identify the chance of post-concussion syndrome, which can take place after a mild traumatic brain injury.

The study performed at St. Michael’s hospital in Ontario showed that abnormal DTI readings could be linked to a higher number of PCS symptoms. Even minor injuries to the corpus callosum, which controls the body’s sensory, motor and cognitive coordination, could be found and used to predict problems with emotions, behavior and cognitive impairments. With more knowledge about the extent of the injury, doctors can prescribe a better treatment plan.

Probably most importantly is that DTI scans pick up damage that isn’t seen on computerized tomography scans or other kinds of imaging tests. That means that this test can be a useful tool for predicting a patient’s outcome and showing medical providers the ways in which they need to treat patients to be most effective.
