Chronic pain: Managing pain is an ongoing challenge

Patients who experience a spinal cord injury can be likely to suffer from serious pain. The pain, known as neuropathic pain, affects each person differently, but a July 28 report revealed that for the first time, there will be clinical guidelines for pain management of this condition in Canada.

As a patient who suffers from nerve pain, you know how hard it can be to work, play and be involved. Just knowing that your pain is present and unchanging, whether it’s pain that waxes and wanes or persistent burning, can be a devastating realization.

The chronic pain you live with can make it hard to recover from the injury; even a mild pain throughout the day can be tiring and challenging. It plays a major role in recovery; patients who are fatigued from chronic pain can do less and recover less quickly. Managing pain, therefore, can be beneficial in helping people actually get over pain and recover faster.

Keeping pain levels under control means patients can live life to the fullest, even after they step out of the hospital. Giving patients the keys to reduce pain and to get proper sleep and rehabilitation can be what’s necessary to keep them healthy with their spinal cord injuries.

For patients to get this care, they need to be supported. Their doctors should be persistent in checking their injuries, and the person responsible for the accident that caused the injuries should cover the expenses of ongoing therapies and pain management techniques to help the patient heal better and lead a more fulfilling life.
