A Kingston, Ontario Car Accident Lawyer Talks About the Importance of Seatbelts

One of the top four factors causing fatal collisions in Ontario is not using safety equipment like a seatbelt or a helmet. The other three are:

  • impaired driving,
  • distracted driving, and
  • speeding.

According to the OPP, 50 people were killed in Ontario motor vehicle crashes because they were not wearing seatbelts in 2014. It seems that this year, that number is not going to decrease; rather, it may increase.

Last week, the OPP issued a statement that there has been an increase in the number of people who have died in Ontario auto crashes because they did not buckle up.

Between September 7 and September 13, 2015, 6 people died in car accidents on Ontario roads because they were not wearing their seatbelts. In 2015 so far, 42 people, including the 6 deaths noted above, died in car accidents because they did not have their seatbelts on.

The OPP will be launching a fall seatbelt program to spread awareness about the importance of seatbelt use. Ontario law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts. Drivers must ensure that passengers under the age of 16 are buckled up or secured in appropriate child car seats or booster seats. If they are not, drivers will be fined between $200 and $1,000 and receive 2 demerit points. Passengers over the age of 16 are responsible for buckling themselves in. When a car is pulled over, any passengers over the age of 16 who are not buckled in may be fined.

Failure to wear a seatbelt doesn’t always result in death; however, serious injuries often occur. Because drivers and passengers are not restrained in their seats, their bodies are often thrown about inside the vehicles as a result of collisions. They often sustain serious catastrophic injuries such as a traumatic brain injury.

At Bergeron Clifford, we help injured car accident victims after their car accidents. We help them financially recover from the at-fault drivers. However, we also want to help prevent these accidents. Car accident fatalities due to the non-use of seatbelts are avoidable. All you have to do is take a few seconds to make sure you and your passengers are buckled in. It can be a matter of life and death.
