You’ve stabilized and reduced the fracture, mended the wound, prescribed analgesics. The patient is to go home and rest, engage in physiotherapy, come back in a month for follow up. But what happens in that month? Who pays the mortgage? Hydro? Utilities? Who takes children to soccer games, school, the doctor? Who makes meals for the non-ambulatory? Does your patient’s home accommodate a wheelchair?

Without answers to these questions, your patient may return in a month showing little or inadequate progress. Your care is like fresh cement. Once you’ve finished your initial work, it’s susceptible to the vagaries of the community. To errant influences. Stress. These are gangs of roving kids with nothing better to do than deface your work.
