Living with spinal cord injuries can be extremely expensive

Most people who are exposed to the media in Ontario have at some point heard about someone being awarded a large settlement after suffering injuries in an accident. What few people probably realize is that the money, though it seems more than ample, may in fact be just enough to pay for ongoing care. A rare glimpse into the breakdown of a court-ordered payment was given recently after a woman won a lawsuit over an accident that left her with major spinal cord injuries.

Is there any such thing as "really good insurance?"

A friend of a friend had an awful accident. Someone ran a red light and there was a devastating t-bone impact. He broke both legs and an arm. This gentleman is an independent contractor in his 30s, married, with one young child at home. His wife does not work outside of the home.

Understanding premises liability: Who's responsible after a fall?

When the weather turns unpleasant, as it often does in Ontario during the winter, there tends to be a corresponding increase in slip-and-fall accidents. While most such incidents are minor, many people are injured every year, and in every season, after a slip, trip or stumble. Sometimes no one is to blame for such an accident; however there are occasions when fault may lie with whoever is responsible for the property. This oft-misunderstood legal area is called premises liability.

Fatal motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead in Ontario

An 81-year-old woman has tragically died after a car accident in Northern Ontario, according to local sources. The Ontario Provincial Police, responsible for investigating fatal motor vehicle accidents, was on the scene on Highway 17 in Nairn Centre on the morning of Jan. 5. Another individual was injured in the crash, but is expected to survive. Police are still determining the cause of the accident.

Statistics on fatal motor vehicle accidents released in Ontario

The end of the old year and beginning of the new is often a time for reflection on the past. The Ministry of Transportation has recently released road safety statistics for the year 2014 for the public to see. Among the numbers are some interesting and alarming data on fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Who is to blame when brain injuries happen at a sports facility?

While an accident can happen at anytime, participation in certain activities can increase the likelihood. For example, nearly all sports carry elements of risk for physical damage, ranging from mild contusions to severe brain injuries. If an accident occurs at a sports facility, however, can the owners of the facility be held responsible? An accident victim and the owner of an eastern Ontario resort have differing views on this subject, and are going to court to settle the matter.

Survivors of fatal motor vehicle accidents often left in anguish

The phrase "lucky to be alive" rings very true for anyone who lives through a serious accident. For survivors of fatal motor vehicle accidents, though, having to live with the emotional and physical scars of the incident will be more difficult than most people can imagine. That is likely the case for two teenagers who escaped with their lives from a terrible accident in Northern Ontario.
