Tips for Ontario Drivers This Winter

Over the weekend, we saw the first snow fall across Ontario cities, like Kingston and Ottawa. Now the province faces two more snow squalls this coming week.

Ottawa saw a dusting of snow yesterday morning, but got hit with several centimetres of snow by the evening. Though the snow did not cause major problems for the morning commute yesterday in Ottawa, it did cause a slew of accidents on Highway 401 in areas around Toronto, Ontario. Portions of Highway 401 westbound were closed after a multi-vehicle collision that involved a tractor trailer that jackknifed just before 4 a.m. A little bit later, there was a two-vehicle crash on the QEW. *Source: www.cbc.ca (Ontario snow causes multiple highway collisions around Toronto)

The impending snow falls could impact the 401 corridor, a region that is notorious for accidents and road closures.

Below are some tips for Ontario drivers to avoid car accidents this winter and what to do in the event accidents do occur:

#1. Leave a Safe Following Distance Between Your Car & the Car Ahead

Many rear-end accidents happen in slippery and snowy road conditions. Therefore, it is a good idea for drivers to leave ample distance between their cars and the cars ahead.

Under Ontario law, a driver who hits the car ahead is deemed to be generally at fault. Drivers cannot use the slippery or wintry road conditions as an excuse for the cause of the accident. Even though slippery or snowy roads may have contributed to a rear-end accident, a driver who hits a car ahead is generally at fault because drivers are expected to use extra caution when driving in slippery road conditions.

#2. Call the Police After an Accident

In the event of an accident, an injured driver should call the Ontario Provincial Police. Sometimes, involved drivers don't want to call the police because they want to try to settle the case themselves in terms of injuries and property damage. However, this is not a good idea. A police officer will interview witnesses, if any, and the parties involved. All of the information will go in a police report which parties can obtain at a later date.

#3. Gather Contact Information of Witnesses

It is important to get the contact information of witnesses after a car accident. Some witnesses may leave before the police arrive, but their testimony may be necessary to prove the other driver's liability in your eventual car accident lawsuit.

Contact an Ontario Car Accident Injury Lawyer

If drivers are injured in motor vehicle accidents, they have legal rights. They can file accident benefits claims and tort claims (lawsuits) against the at-fault drivers. Therefore, it is important to contact a car accident lawyer in Ontario after a car accident in Ottawa, Kingston or Whitby. An experienced lawyer can help and make sure injured individuals obtain the recovery they are entitled to.
