Recent Fatal Car Crashes in Ottawa - By an Ottawa Catastrophic Injury Lawyer

Ottawa Car Accident Results in One Death and Catastrophic Injuries to Another

On November 8th, there was a fatal intersection car accident involving a tow truck and an Acura sedan in Nepean, Ottawa. The man driving the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene, and the teenage girl sitting in the back passenger seat suffered catastrophic injuries in the crash. The girl was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries to her head, abdomen, pelvis and lower leg.

The tow truck driver was arrested after the collision and charged with dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. It is unclear whether speed was a factor in the fatal accident, but residents in the area say drivers often speed through the area.

Pedestrian Hit and Killed by a Car in Manotick, Ottawa

On November 12th, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car in Manotick, Ottawa. A 68 year old woman was crossing the street when she was hit by the car. The posted speed limit on the road is 80 km/h, but residents say drivers often speed by at 100 km/h.

Speed Often a Cause of Fatal or Catastrophic Car Accidents & Injuries

Though both of the above accidents are under investigation, speed is likely to be a factor. Reports released by the OPP provide that most fatal collisions on roads and highways patrolled by the OPP in 2014 were due to impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding.

Ontario drivers often ignore posted speed limits and drive above the speed limits. The risk of fatal and serious accidents increases on roads where there are bus stops and young children.

Pedestrians hit by speeding cars often sustain catastrophic, if not fatal, injuries.
Pedestrians hit by speeding cars and drivers/passengers injured in high speed car accidents often need medical treatment. Many may think that the at-fault drivers are responsible for the injured victims' medical expenses; however, it is actually the injured victims' auto insurance companies that cover their medical expenses through accident benefits claims, specifically through medical
and rehabilitation benefits.

There are other types of accident benefits insured victims are eligible to receive, such as income replacement benefits and attendant care benefits.

Though medical expenses are covered by injured victims' insurance companies, victims do have a right to file a tort claim or lawsuit against an at-fault driver to recover pain and suffering and medical benefits not covered by accident benefits.
