Ontario Motorcycle Accidents & Injuries May Be the Worst in 2015 - By a Whitby Car Accident Lawyer

Another motorcycle accident in Ontario resulted in catastrophic, life-threatening injuries to a 31 year old man this past Wednesday. As we mentioned in a previous article, there have been several fatal motorcycle accidents this summer, and it appears that this trend is carrying over to the fall. See Motorcycle Accidents Often Result in Catastrophic Injuries.

The 31 year old man's motorcycle collided with a pickup truck making a left turn from a road onto the Highway 401 ramp, near London, Ontario, which is approximately 2.5 hours from Whitby, Ontario. The motorcyclist was taken by air ambulance to a hospital. According to the police, the rider had his bike for only 2 days. There were patches of fog, and police will investigate to determine whether fog was a factor.

On Tuesday, the day before this accident, another serious car-motorcycle accident claimed the life of a pickup truck driver and seriously injured a 19 year old motorcycle rider.

According to reports, more than 27 people have died in motorcycle accidents in Ontario so far in 2015. The OPP says that it's the worst they have seen in terms of motorcycle injuries.

Motorcycle Helmets Help Avoid the Risk of Head Injuries

Because there are no seatbelts, motorcycle riders are often ejected from their bikes in a crash, resulting in serious orthopedic injuries. In addition, if riders are not wearing helmets, the risk of sustaining a permanent traumatic brain injury increases.

The law in Ontario requires motorcycle riders and passengers to wear motorcycle helmets when riding. Helmets give the riders a better chance of avoiding serious head injuries in the event of a car-motorcycle crash.

According to the OPP, almost half of the riders who died in motorcycle crashes between 2010 and 2014 were not wearing helmets at the time of the accidents. Therefore, it is imperative that riders wear helmets when riding.

Unfortunately, even the most experienced motorcycle rider who wears a helmet may still be injured in a crash due to another driver's negligence. The other motorist may be speeding or texting while driving and crash into the motorcycle. In such instances, the motorcycle rider has legal rights against the at-fault driver.
