Young Ontario Drivers & Winter Motor Vehicle Accidents

Young drivers have to be extra cautious when driving on Ontario roads this winter. The fact that they are newly minted drivers puts young people at a disadvantage and more likely to cause motor vehicle accidents in the winter.

Fatal Head-On Car Crash Near Whitby, Ontario

Earlier this month, a 17 year old girl from Ajax died after her car collided with another car on the road. According to the police, she was driving her car at a high rate of speed when she lost control, crossed the centre line and hit a car traveling the opposite direction.

The girl's car then hit a hydro pole. She needed to be extricated from her car. Sadly, she later died from her injuries at the hospital. The driver and passenger from the other car were treated for their injuries. Police say speed and the 17 year old girl's inexperience are being investigated as the causes of the fatal car crash.

Young Drivers & Risk of Fatal Car Crashes

Research has shown that young drivers are about eight times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes during their first six months of driving than experienced drivers. Even after six months, teen drivers are two to three times more likely to be in fatal crashes than experienced drivers.

Why are Young Drivers Prone to Accidents?

Many young drivers overestimate their driving skills. They think that they are great drivers and may drive recklessly, i.e., speeding, tailgating, etc. In addition, they may think they are great at multi-tasking. For instance, they may believe that they can text and drive at the same time, not realizing that they are putting their lives and the lives of others on the road at risk.

For young drivers, texting with their friends is a primary way of communication. They do it all day long. Once they start texting behind the wheel, they do it again and again because they believe their "skills" have prevented them from causing any accidents. This is a misguided belief because they have simply been lucky. They are not great at driving and texting at the same time.

Throw in wintry road conditions and young drivers may be more at risk of causing car accidents. They may have never driven in the snow before and do not have the skills to recognize hazards, such as black ice. Thus, if they are speeding and hit a patch of ice, they may lose control of their vehicles and cause auto accidents.

If you are a parent and have a teen driver, you should talk to them about these risks. It may just save your child's life and other motorists' lives.
