The Dangers of Ontario Truck Accidents in Kingston, Ottawa or Whitby

Motor vehicle accidents involving trucks or tractor-trailers on Ontario highways can lead to serious, if not fatal accidents. Due to the sheer size of the trucks, coupled with the fact that the trucks are traveling at high speeds on highways, parties involved often suffer catastrophic injuries.

In fact, there have been several truck accidents in Ontario the last few months that have resulted in serious injuries. At the end of March this year, a truck driver was charged after a serious truck-car accident on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Odessa, near Kingston. The truck crashed into another vehicle, hit a barrier and rolled into the median ditch. *Source: www.ottawacitizen.com (Highway lanes reopen near Napanee, truck driver charged)

The driver was taken to the hospital and has since been charged with careless driving and driving with a suspended license.

Another truck accident occurred in Bowmanville on Highway 401 that same week. Sadly, a woman died after her car crashed into a tractor-trailer, rolled onto its roof and ejected her from her car. *Source: www.globalnews.ca (Westbound Highway 401 in Bowmanville reopens after fatal crash)

On Mother's Day, another tractor-trailer/car accident killed 2 people on Highway 401. The tractor-trailer crossed a grass median and struck an oncoming car head-on. The people in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. *Source: www.sunnewsnetwork.ca (Two dead, one injured following Ontario highway collision)

Causes of Truck Accidents

One of the reasons truck accidents happen is because of driver fatigue. As part of their jobs, truck drivers are required to work long hours. They often have to drive long hours to make deliveries. Sometimes, if truck drivers are trying to make deliveries on time, they may choose not to take breaks. Therefore, they are driving when they are tired, which increases the chance of accidents.

Another reason truck accidents may happen is if the drivers are distracted because they are using their cell phones while driving. If a truck driver is texting while driving on the highway, such as Highway 401, and does not see that traffic ahead has come to a stop, he may cause a serious rear-end accident. By the time the driver looks up from his cell phone, it may be too late. Because of the truck's size, it is often difficult to make the truck come to a complete stop suddenly. Either the truck violently slams into the car ahead, or the truck driver may try to avoid the car ahead by veering to one direction, which may cause the tractor-trailer to roll over.
