Ottawa, Kingston & Whitby Bicycle-Car Accidents - Ottawa Police Continue With "Bicycle Safety Blitz" In July

Summer is officially here, and naturally, more people are outside enjoying the beautiful weather. One of the many summer activities that people like to do is ride their bikes. They may be riding their bikes to work or for recreational purposes. Unfortunately, with more cyclists on the roadways in Ottawa, Kingston and Whitby, there are also more bicycle accidents, i.e., cyclists hit by cars, trucks or buses.

Ottawa Bicycle-Car Accidents

The Ottawa police reported that there were 1,544 collisions involving cyclists between 2008 and 2012 in Ottawa, causing 13 deaths and 1,238 injuries. These were just the reported collisions and accidents; minor accidents not reported were not included in these reports.

To promote cycling safety and educate riders on what they can to do avoid bicycle-motor vehicle accidents, the Ottawa policed conducted a "safety blitz" for Ottawa cyclists at the end of last month.

The program is part of Safer Roads Ottawa, a partnership between Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Services, Ottawa Public Health and the Public Works Department, RCMP, OPP, Military Police, as well as Gatineau police. Safer Roads Ottawa is committed to preventing road deaths and serious injuries for all people in the City of Ottawa.

The safety blitz took place in areas where there were more cyclists, such as downtown Ottawa, the Byward Market and Centretown. The police were looking to make sure cyclists had everything they were supposed to have while riding on the roads. Some of those things include:

  • helmets,
  • lights, and/or
  • whistles.

The police were also making sure cyclists obeyed the rules of the road.

After the two-day blitz, Ottawa police pulled over more than 130 cyclists and issued 14 tickets to cyclists for violating rules of the road and 2 tickets for equipment violations. The police will continue with more safety blitzes in July.

Though the safety blitz was intended for cyclists, it is also important that drivers practice safe driving around cyclists as well. Motor vehicle operators also need to abide by the rules of the road. Drivers need to keep a safe distance when attempting to pass cyclists and make sure they are not cutting off cyclists or making turns right in front of them to avoid accidents.

Injured in a Bicycle-Car or Bicycle-Truck Accident in Ottawa or Kingston?

Even when cyclists are following the rules of the road and riding their bikes safely, they may still be injured in car or truck accidents due to drivers who are distracted, i.e., talking or texting on the phone or not paying attention. Injured cyclists have legal rights and may recover just financial compensation. Call the personal injury lawyers at Bergeron Clifford to schedule a FREE consultation. 866-384-5886
